Installing PC games

A general guide for Windows. Each game page lists which formats that game uses once it is released.

Format 1

ZIP (portable)

  1. Download the ZIP file from your download link (for KEEP IT OUT V1.0: KEEP_IT_OUT_V1.0_Windows.zip).
  2. Verify the file using the checksum (see below).
  3. Right-click the ZIP, choose Extract All, and extract it to a folder such as C:\Games.
  4. Open the extracted folder and run the game's .exe file (for KEEP IT OUT: KEEP_IT_OUT.exe).

KEEP IT OUT is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning the first time you run it. In that case, select More info, then Run anyway, but only for files downloaded from an official TLN link.

Updating: download the new version and extract it over the old folder, or into a new folder.

Uninstalling: delete the game folder. Nothing else is installed.

Save files: the save location is TBA for each game and will be listed on its page.

Format 2

Installer

  1. Run the setup file from your download link.
  2. Choose an install folder, or keep the default.
  3. Choose whether to create desktop and Start menu shortcuts.
  4. Finish setup and launch the game from the shortcut.

Updating: run the newer setup file. It installs over the existing version.

Uninstalling: open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the game, and select Uninstall.

Security

Verify the download

Each release will list a SHA-256 checksum on its game page. To check your file, open PowerShell and run:

For example, from the folder containing the download:

Get-FileHash .\KEEP_IT_OUT_V1.0_Windows.zip -Algorithm SHA256

The Hash value shown must match the published checksum exactly. If it does not, delete the file and download it again.

Troubleshooting

  • Antivirus warning: new games can trigger false positives. Verify the checksum first, then contact support rather than disabling your antivirus.
  • Missing DLL errors: if a game needs the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX runtime, install the latest supported x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft's official page (direct download: vc_redist.x64.exe).
  • Graphics issues or crashes: update your GPU drivers from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.
  • Game will not start from the ZIP: make sure you extracted the whole archive and are not running the .exe from inside the ZIP.

Re-downloads and support

KEEP IT OUT is sold through itch.io. Re-download it from your itch.io library or purchase email. Direct sales from TLN are not open.
